Charlton Heston is one of the best-known actors in the second half of the twentieth century, having appeared on screen over 100 times since 1950. He has played such famous characters as Andrew Jackson, Moses, Buffalo Bill Cody, El Cid, FDR, John the Baptist, Marc Antony, British hero General Charles Gordon, Henry VII and Brigham Young. Of course, he was also the nemesis of ape-kind, Col. George Taylor.
1991 saw a curious site: Heston was performing a stage version of the Holmes play, Crucifer of Blood. It was taking place in San Francisco, and a fellow named Jeremy Brett performed as Watson. The play was based on The Sign of the Four, although it certainly had a surprise ending. That same year, Heston starred in a made-for-television version. Heston’s scene as an opium dealer is a memorable one.
