Basil Rathbone

If you hit the 1940-1949 link, you were brought to the Basil Rathbone Gallery. No actor has more dominated a role than Rathbone with Sherlock Holmes. Between 1939 and 1946 he made fifteen movies and did 242 radio broadcasts. There were no other Sherlock Holmes movies or television shows during the forties, and no major new plays. It would be thirteen years before another actor dared to play Holmes on the big screen (Peter Cushing in 1959's Hound of the Baskervilles). In the 1940's, there was only one Sherlock Holmes, and he was Basil Rathbone.
There's not enough room here to discuss the career Basil Rathbone had in the role. The link below has quite a bit of information on him.
For information on Rathbone as Holmes, see "The Definitive Holmes."

The Rathbone Galleries here contain over 100 photos of the actor as Sherlock Holmes.
They are by movie, with separate galleries for publicity photos, and a final gallery for pictures I have not yet identified. I am constantly working on improving the quality of the pictures, which are all between fifty and sixty-two years old. Enjoy.
