William Gillette

William Gillette is largely unknown to the casual Sherlock Holmes fan. Yet among the scholar in the field of public performances featuring the great detective, he stands alongside Rathbone and Brett, at the very least. I devoted a great deal of attention to his importance in my own essay, The Definitive Holmes. For a brief overview, read this file. You'll also find information about his plays on my Plays page. And see how Gillette introduced the deerstalker and curved pipe in another of my essays: What About the Gown?
For an extensive amount of information on his life, you can visit The William Gillette HomePage.
This homage to Gillette will be an ongoing project, with more illustrations always being sought. I'm particularly pleased to have photos from his lost 1916 silent film.
Below are a few galleries, including photos from his film and stage performances, as well as drawings of the great actor.
