D.H. Friston

The first illustrator of the Canon was a popular man named D.H. Friston. Every Sherlockian worth his salt knows that the great detective made his first appeaance in the Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887. He did four drawings for the first publication of Sherlock Holmes, all of which are below. Note the slick sideburns on Holmes. The next illustrator would be Charles Doyle, the author's father. Those drawings made Friston's very good in comparison.
